The impact of the Great War and its aftermath on Belgian artistic life World War I had a major effect on Belgian visual arts. German occupation, the horror at the battlefield and the experience of exile led to multiple narratives and artistic expressions by Belgian artists during and after the war. Belgian interbellum art is extremely vibrant and diverse. 14/18 – Rupture or Continuity takes a look at Belgian artistic life in the years around the First World War and how it was affected by this event. The Great War was a catalyst of artistic oppositions, leading on the one hand to a Belgian avant-garde that explored new forms and styles, while continuing to uphold a more traditional and established art on the other. Whereas the war experience consolidated an already present style for some artists, for others it constituted a revolution leading to new artistic adventures. Humanintentionality in chemical patterns in Bronze Age metals For the last 180 years,scientists have been attempting to determine the 'provenance' (geologicalsource) of the copper used in Bronze Age artefacts. However, despite advancesin analytical technologies, the theoretical approach has remained virtuallyunchanged over this period, with the interpretative methodology only changingto accommodate the increasing capacity of computers. This book represents aconcerted effort to think about the composition of Bronze Age metal as theproduct of human intentionality as well as of geology. Church leaders and their contrasting opinions in theface of the Great WarCardinal Désiré-JosephMercier, Archbishop of Malines, was the incarnation of the Belgian resistanceagainst the German occupation during the First World War. With his famous pastoralletter of Christmas 1914 'Patriotisme et Endurance' he reached a wide audience,and gained international influence and respect.Mercier's distinct patriotic stance clearly determined his views ofnational politics, especially of the 'Flemish question', and his conflict withthe German occupier made him a hero of the Allies. The Germans did not alwaysknow how to handle this influential man of the Church. Pope Benedict XV did notalways approve of the course of action adopted by the Belgian prelate. Theunique position of design in the political context of postwar BelgiumIn the postwar era,design became important as a marker of modernity and progress at world fairsand international exhibitions and in the global markets. The Belgian state tooka special interest in this vanguard phenomenon of 'industrial design' as a vitalpolitical and economic strategic tool in the context of the Cold War and thecreation of the European community. This book describes the unique position thatdesign occupied in the political context of postwar Belgium as it analyses thepublic promotion of design between 1950 and 1986. It traces this process, fromthe first government-backed manifestations and institutions in the 1950s throughthe 1960s and 1970s, until design lost its privileged position as astate-backed institution, a process which culminated in the closure of theBrussels Design Centre in 1986, in the midst of the Belgian federalisation process.A key figure in this history is the policymaker Josine des Cressonnières, whoplayed a leading role in the national and international design community and succeededin connecting very different political worlds through the medium of design.

Latin does not belong to any particular country, but to the Republic of Letters with its high aims and universal appeal. A comprehensive critical anthology of Neo-Latin would thus be useful in the classroom, both in secondary school and on university level, as well as for independent scholars. The present volume is comprised of about fifty texts pertaining to geographical areas all around the world, spanning the 14th to the 20th centuries, written in a wide range of genres by authors of varied backgrounds, and touching on topics of dramatic importance for today. The language of the anthology is Latin, in accordance with the universality it aims to represent by its selection of texts.

Pilote's unique position in a new and fast developing youth press marketThe French comic magazinePilote hebdomadaire arrived in a weakening comics market in 1959 largely dominated by syndicated translations of American comics and comics inspired by a Catholic ethos. It tailored its content and tone to an older adolescent reader far removed from that of France's infant comic. Pilote's profile set it on a turbulent course subject to the vicissitudes and fickleness of fashion which situated it within an emerging teenager press under pressure to renew and innovate to survive. When it made cartoons its defining characteristic in 1963, Pilote articulated its uniqueness by channelling teenager discourse through them whilst also trying to encourage a zest for education in a modernising and economically buoyant France of exciting new opportunities. Pilote's cartoon art thus became a dynamic repository for the ideas and attitudes of France's educated youth which evolved into the radical discourses of the lifestyle and political revolutions of the late 1960s and early 1970s.This book tells how Pilote hebdomadaire's unique positioning in a new and fast developing youth press market for teenagers provided the forum and catalyst for the bande dessinée's stylistic evolution over the course of the 1960s and 1970s.

This painting's indeterminate yet compellingstatus provides Volkmar Mühleis grounds to look beyond its historicalsignificance and to explore its anthropological scope as well, from anintercultural perspective and, moreover, against the backdrop of its complex ofthemes concerning life and death. To do so, Mühleis returns to the conceptualpremises that frame the relationship between the history of art and theanthropology of images, along with those that juxtapose Western and Easternphilosophies.
